In October 2018, the journal Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism reported on a study by Quanzhou Hospital and Fujian Medical University in Quanzhou, China. Scientists looked at a mild brain disorder, an early stage of dementia, in 715 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that low levels of BDNF increased the risk of a brain disorder by 275 percent. The link was stronger in people with obesity than in non-obese people with diabetes. The researchers concluded that measuring levels of BDNF might be a way to discover those with diabetes at risk of developing dementia.


Research into BDNF is still in the initial stages, so reliable ways of increasing it are not known. Fortunately, many manageable risk factors for dementia are known.

For obese individuals, reducing weight by as much as 5 percent may be helpful for controlling type 2 diabetes and for helping maintain general health. It can also help prevent dementia.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, type 2 diabetes is not a condition you have to live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar level. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
